One of the longest social and economic links in the Middle east is between the Indian sub-continent and Armenia. Although what we now call Armenia was until recently part of the Soviet Union, historically Armenia has been a major influence in the development of Christian Orthodoxy in the Middle East. Armenian merchants were trading with India before the Europeans arrived and Armenians and Anglo-Armenians continued to exert their economic influence of India until recent times.
At the time of Indian partition in 1947, many Armenians left India and moved to other countries, mainly in the British Commonwealth where they form discrete communities.
There has been little research undertaken on the role of Armenians in India and even less on the Armenian and Anglo-Armenian families that made India their home. Tony Fuller and Jenny Law specialise in researching this area and have formed a study group to help in their research.
